In Ohio State’s narrow 32-31 loss to Oregon, transfer running back Quinshon Judkins made a mistake that will undoubtedly linger in the minds of Buckeye fans. Early in the first quarter, with Ohio State leading 7-0, Judkins fumbled the ball on one of his 11 carries, a costly turnover that shifted momentum to the Ducks. Instead of the Buckeyes extending their lead and potentially quieting the Autzen Stadium crowd, Oregon defensive lineman Derrick Harmon ripped the ball from Judkins’ grasp, allowing the Ducks to seize the moment.

Had the Buckeyes scored on that drive, they would have taken a commanding two-possession lead, potentially putting Oregon on their heels. But the fumble, a game-altering play, left Ohio State searching for answers in a contest that slipped away.

Now, there’s new context surrounding Judkins’ critical error. According to On3 Sports’ Pete Nakos, Judkins played the game with a significant hand injury, his hand heavily wrapped for protection. Following the game, Judkins underwent a medical procedure to address the issue, a likely explanation for why he wasn’t at full strength in the Buckeyes’ backfield.

While Judkins is not expected to miss any time due to the procedure, the news adds a bittersweet layer to Ohio State’s performance. The Buckeyes have a bye week before hosting Nebraska next Saturday, giving Judkins time to recover fully. So far this season, the talented running back has amassed 491 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 71 carries, along with seven receptions for 67 yards.

Ohio State, now 5-1, will look to rebound from their first loss of the season, but the fumble and Judkins’ compromised health remain frustrating factors in what could have been a pivotal road victory.
