The Vegas Golden Knights are securing their future, announcing a seven-year contract extension with defenseman Shea Theodore on Thursday. The extension, which carries an average annual value of $7.425 million, will keep Theodore with Vegas through the 2031-2032 season, further cementing his role as a cornerstone of the franchise.
Originally drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in 2013, Theodore made his NHL debut in Anaheim before being traded to Vegas during the 2017 Expansion Draft. Since then, he’s become one of the Golden Knights’ “original misfits,” a small group of players who’ve been with the team since its inaugural 2017-2018 season. Alongside teammates William Karlsson and Brayden McNabb, Theodore helped lead the Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Final in their first season and played a pivotal role in securing their first championship in 2023.
“I’m excited to be here for another seven years and really solidify this place as home,” Theodore shared in a video on the team’s social media channels, hinting at his commitment to both the team and the city.
A native of British Columbia, Theodore has been instrumental on the ice, boasting 72 goals, 241 assists, and a career plus-minus of +66. He’s also proven himself in high-stakes moments; during Vegas’s 2023 Stanley Cup run, Theodore recorded 13 points and posted a +8 rating, consistently clocking over 20 minutes per game throughout each of his five postseasons with the team.
Theodore’s extension not only solidifies his future in Vegas but also underscores the Golden Knights’ commitment to retaining their foundational players as they build upon their success. As one of the key figures in Vegas’s rapid rise, Theodore’s leadership and skill will continue to shape the team’s trajectory as they look to contend for more championships.
