Mets Poised to Add $162M Two-Time All-Star in Position Change.
The New York Mets are reportedly focusing their offseason efforts on acquiring starting pitcher Corbin Burnes and outfielder Juan Soto, but could there also be a possibility of Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman joining the team? While Bregman posted a career-low .768 OPS in 2024, much of that decline came from a slow start to the season.
He managed to bounce back, finishing with 26 home runs, 75 RBI, and 79 runs scored over 634 plate appearances, not far from his usual production levels.
Bregman, who is represented by agent Scott Boras, is poised for a lucrative deal this offseason. A return to the Astros seems the most likely scenario, but Bregman is keeping his options open, which could broaden his market. Boras mentioned at the GM Meetings that Bregman is willing to play second base if the right situation arises, adding more intrigue to his potential fit with teams like the Mets.
For New York, Mark Vientos currently holds the third base position, but if he remains at the hot corner, Bregman could be a compelling option for the Mets. A reunion with the Astros still seems most probable, as reflected by the majority of MLB experts who predict Bregman will stay in Houston, though USA Today’s Jesse Yomtov sees him landing with the Mets. Bregman’s contract negotiations are expected to start around the six-year, $151 million extension Matt Chapman signed with the San Francisco Giants, with some predicting a six-year, $162 million deal, like CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson’s forecast.
