Oregon’s Eric Roedl Named Villanova’s New Athletic Director, Returning to His Alma Mater
In a significant shake-up within college athletics, Oregon’s long-time deputy athletic director Eric Roedl has been appointed as Villanova University‘s new athletic director. Roedl, who has been with Oregon for 13 years, will return to his alma mater, where he earned his degree in 1997 and was a standout tennis player. He takes over the role at Villanova in January, marking a full-circle moment in his career.
Roedl has played a pivotal role at Oregon since joining the athletic department in 2011. His leadership as deputy athletic director and chief operating officer since 2016 has been instrumental in managing the day-to-day operations of several of the university’s most prominent programs. Notably, Roedl’s work with the football program, men’s basketball, baseball, and men’s and women’s tennis teams helped elevate Oregon’s athletic profile during his tenure.
Villanova President, Father Peter M. Donohue, expressed his excitement for Roedl’s appointment, emphasizing his experience and vision for the future. “When we began our search, we were looking for an individual who understands our Augustinian mission, who is able to successfully navigate the changing landscape of college athletics and who possesses the necessary skills to build on our legacy of success — athletically, academically, and administratively — well into the future,” Donohue said in a statement. “Eric quickly stood out among a very talented group of candidates as a leader with a breadth of experience, vision and deep commitment to student-athletes.”
A native of Villanova and a former student-athlete, Roedl’s familiarity with the university’s culture and values will serve him well as he steps into his new role. “It is an honor to return to my alma mater,” Roedl said. “My vision is to collaborate with University leadership, the Villanova community, our coaches, staff, and student-athletes to maintain a championship culture throughout the athletic department that places the highest value on student-athlete experience and success.”
Oregon Farewells Roedl With High Praise
Roedl’s departure from Oregon leaves a significant gap in the athletic department, where he had a hand in many key decisions and oversaw critical operational functions. His work with football scheduling and his support of the men’s basketball program under coach Dana Altman have been highlights of his Oregon tenure. Both Altman and football head coach Dan Lanning offered their well wishes in statements that praised Roedl’s leadership and dedication.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled for Eric and his family,” Lanning said. “I’ve been fortunate enough to work closely with Eric and our football team the last three years here at Oregon and can say with confidence that Villanova is getting an all-star.”
Altman, too, expressed appreciation for Roedl’s impact on the men’s basketball program. “Eric has worked closely with our basketball program for the past 12 years, and we are going to miss his leadership and support,” Altman said. “They will be missed by the Ducks but will be a tremendous addition to the Villanova community.”
A Strong Foundation for Villanova’s Future
Before his time at Oregon, Roedl built a strong foundation at Temple University, where he served as deputy athletics director and oversaw the football, men’s basketball, and baseball programs. His earlier career also included stints at the College of William & Mary and Ernst & Young, where he earned his CPA certification.
Oregon Athletic Director Rob Mullens also weighed in on the hire, praising Villanova’s decision. “Eric brings strong leadership, a commitment to the student-athlete experience and a competitive spirit to Villanova. The Wildcats have a bright future with Eric Roedl at the helm,” Mullens said.
For Villanova, Roedl’s leadership comes at a pivotal time. As college athletics continues to evolve—especially with shifting conference landscapes and the ongoing battle for NIL resources—Roedl’s vast experience navigating these challenges will be invaluable. His deep commitment to enhancing the student-athlete experience, paired with his strategic vision, makes him the ideal leader to guide Villanova’s athletic department into the next era.
What’s Next for Oregon Athletics?
While Oregon must now find a replacement for Roedl, the Ducks remain in strong hands with their deep roster of experienced administrators and coaches. With Roedl’s departure, Oregon will look to build upon the foundation of success he helped foster, especially in football and basketball, both of which have been key drivers of the program’s national reputation.
As Roedl heads east to take on his new role at Villanova, all eyes will be on how the Wildcats respond to the next chapter in their storied athletic history under his leadership.

For Villanova, it’s a win, and for Oregon, the search for a successor begins—ensuring that Roedl’s legacy will continue to influence both programs for years to come.
