It was a scene no one ever wants to witness on the football field: a young player lying motionless, surrounded by teammates, coaches, and medical staff in a tense and somber moment. But for Carolina Panthers rookie tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders, the outcome of his scary neck injury on Sunday has provided some hope.

Sanders was carted off the field during the first half of the Panthers’ Week 12 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, following a brutal hit that left him down for several minutes. The 6’4”, 248-pound tight end took a flip after being hit by two Chiefs defenders, landing awkwardly on the crown of his head, with 26 seconds left in the second quarter. It was a collision that left everyone at Bank of America Stadium holding their breath.

“Obviously, anytime there’s a neck injury, it can be scary,” reflected Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard, who witnessed the play. “I saw the play. Obviously praying for him, he is a great guy.”

The Panthers’ medical staff immediately rushed to Sanders’ side, and after a lengthy delay, he was stabilized and placed on a backboard before being carted off to the hospital. The atmosphere was tense as players from both teams gathered around, waiting for any sign of positive news.

Sanders was taken to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, where he underwent evaluation. Head coach Dave Canales delivered an update after the Panthers’ 30-27 loss to the Chiefs, providing some much-needed good news.

“JT was discharged from the hospital, so that’s good news,” Canales said during his post-game remarks. “I don’t want to make any definitive comments about that, but certainly a positive sign that he’s coming back here to the facility, right now.”

While Sanders’ full diagnosis is still pending, the early signs are encouraging. Canales confirmed that Sanders had continued to show movement in his extremities, a crucial detail that allayed some of the fears surrounding the injury. For now, the focus is on ensuring Sanders’ health, both on and off the field.

“We’ll get more information about that and let you know,” Canales added.

The injury occurred late in the first half, as Sanders made a 10-yard reception from quarterback Bryce Young, moving the chains and stopping the clock as he ran out of bounds. But as Sanders was forced to the sideline, the hit from the two Chiefs defenders flipped him over, leading to the unsettling fall that paused the game for several minutes.

As Sanders was being carted off the field, a moment of relief came when he briefly raised both arms, offering a thumbs up to the crowd and both teams, signaling that he was conscious and alert. It was a sign that things could be better than initially feared.

Bryce Young, the Panthers’ rookie quarterback, expressed the emotional weight of the situation in his post-game comments. “The football part kind of turns off at a time like that and we all are just—it’s really, really rough to see,” Young said. “We’re all praying for him and we all just, in that moment, just want him to be healthy.”

Young, who has developed a close bond with Sanders since their time together in Carolina, continued to praise his teammate’s character. “JT, obviously, he’s done a lot of great things on the field and worked super hard, but he’s an even better person,” Young said. “Someone that we all love in the locker room, all respect, how hard he works. Just the type of guy he is, who cares about everyone, always happy for everyone.”

For the Panthers, the loss to the Chiefs was a tough blow, but the health of their teammate is far more important than any game result. Sanders has shown great promise in his rookie season, and with a strong reputation for hard work and leadership in the locker room, his absence will be felt not just on the field, but also in the hearts of his teammates.

The Panthers (3-8) now turn their attention to a divisional showdown next week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-6). Sanders’ status for that game is uncertain, but as Canales stated, the team is prioritizing its support for Sanders during this challenging time. For now, football is on pause as the Panthers rally around their teammate, waiting for more updates on his recovery.

As for Sanders, everyone in the Panthers organization and beyond is hoping for the best—knowing that, at the end of the day, health is the true victory.
