The Boston Celtics are cruising toward another potential championship run, and they once again look like the best team in the NBA. With a star-studded core led by Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and a key offseason acquisition in Kristaps Porziņģis, Boston has positioned itself as a serious title contender in 2024. However, even the most dominant teams can find room for improvement, and for the Celtics, one area that could benefit from a boost is their frontcourt.

While the Celtics have solid big men in place with Porziņģis, Al Horford, and Neemias Queta, there’s a lingering concern about depth and durability, especially given Porziņģis’ history of injuries. Horford, the 5-time All-Star, is still a valuable asset, but at 38 years old, his play has shown signs of decline. During the playoffs last season, Horford was forced to take on a larger role due to Porziņģis’ injury, and while he stepped up, the wear and tear on his body has become evident.

In this context, the Celtics might want to explore the trade market for a more reliable, long-term option at center. Enter Walker Kessler, the 22-year-old rising star for the Utah Jazz, whose name has been circulating in trade rumors. The Jazz are reportedly willing to move Kessler if the right offer comes along, and Boston could be a perfect landing spot.

Why Walker Kessler Makes Sense for Boston

Kessler, who has quickly emerged as one of the top young defensive centers in the NBA, could be a game-changing addition to the Celtics’ roster. Standing at 7 feet tall with an impressive 9-foot-3 wingspan, Kessler’s shot-blocking and rim protection would provide Boston with a defensive presence that could elevate their already stout defense even further. His defensive stats from last season—led by his 2.3 blocks per game—make him one of the best rim protectors in the league. Adding Kessler would give the Celtics a dynamic, young center with the potential to anchor their defense for years to come.

More than just a shot-blocker, Kessler is a mobile big man with excellent hands, capable of catching lobs and finishing at the rim. His efficient scoring (69% from the field last season) would fit seamlessly into Boston’s ball movement-heavy offense. With the Celtics in “win-now” mode, Kessler would be a perfect complement to their existing core, especially with Porziņģis’ injury history and Horford’s aging legs.

The Financial Fit

One of the main reasons Kessler could make sense for the Celtics, aside from his on-court value, is his financial flexibility. Kessler is on a rookie contract, making just $2.3 million this season and set to earn $4.8 million in 2024-25. For a team like the Celtics, already working within the constraints of the salary cap, Kessler represents an affordable option that would still provide significant value.

In contrast, acquiring a player of Kessler’s caliber—particularly a center with his potential—would usually come at a much higher price tag. Given the Celtics’ desire to remain competitive now while also preparing for the future, Kessler’s contract makes him a rare opportunity.

What Would a Deal Look Like?

As with any trade, acquiring Kessler would come at a cost, but it might be well worth the investment for Boston. According to NBA insider Evan Sidery of Forbes, the Utah Jazz have maintained a high asking price for the young center, rejecting multiple trade offers during the offseason. The Celtics, given their status as a title contender, may be able to meet that price with a package that includes veteran pieces and future assets.

Here’s a potential deal that could work for both sides:

– Celtics receive: Center Walker Kessler and guard Patty Mills
– Jazz receive: Center Al Horford, a 2025 first-round draft pick, a 2030 first-round pick swap, and a 2026 second-round draft pick

This deal would see the Celtics part ways with Horford, a fan favorite and a valuable leader in the locker room. However, losing Horford might be easier to stomach if Boston gains a young center with Kessler’s defensive ability and upside. The Celtics would also add Patty Mills, a veteran guard who could provide depth in the backcourt if needed, especially as Boston aims to bolster its playoff rotation.

On the other side, the Jazz get a steady veteran in Horford, who can mentor their younger players while providing leadership in the locker room. The draft picks would give Utah the flexibility to rebuild around their core of young stars, such as Lauri Markkanen and Walker Kessler’s former teammate, Colin Sexton.

The Impact on Boston’s Title Hopes

Adding Kessler to the mix could significantly elevate Boston’s chances of securing another championship. His rim protection would help mitigate any defensive drop-off if Porziņģis is injured or if Horford’s minutes need to be managed. With Kessler in the fold, Boston’s defense would become even more imposing, making them even tougher to beat in a seven-game series.

Additionally, Kessler’s age and potential fit with the Celtics’ long-term plans are crucial. The core of Tatum, Brown, and Porziņģis is already in place for the next few years, and adding a player like Kessler could ensure that the Celtics remain competitive for a long time. The Celtics are looking to maximize their title window with this group, and Kessler offers both immediate impact and a bright future.

Conclusion: A Move Worth Making

The Boston Celtics are on a mission to win another championship, and while they have an impressive roster in place, adding Walker Kessler could give them the extra edge they need to separate themselves from the competition. His elite defense, affordable contract, and potential to grow within Boston’s system make him a tantalizing target. If the Celtics can pull off a deal with the Utah Jazz, they could be in prime position to dominate the NBA for years to come.

As the trade deadline looms, the Celtics should keep their eye on Kessler, because adding him could be the final piece that propels them to another title.
