Derick Smith

Auburn’s recruiting efforts continue to gain momentum as the Tigers officially secured the commitment of four-star athlete Derick Smith, who signed with the program on Wednesday morning. Smith, a standout at Southside-Selma High School in Alabama, made his decision official alongside his brother, Erick Smith, marking a significant moment for both players and the Auburn coaching staff.

Smith had originally committed to Alabama in March, but the Tigers made a successful pitch during their annual “Big Cat Weekend” recruiting event in July, flipping him away from the Crimson Tide. His decision to join Auburn is a massive win for head coach Hugh Freeze and his staff as they look to build a competitive roster for the future.

A Dual Threat on Both Sides of the Ball

Derick Smith’s versatility on the field makes him one of the most coveted athletes in the 2025 recruiting class. Ranked as the No. 2 athlete in the nation and the No. 7 overall recruit in Alabama according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, Smith’s skill set is unmatched in the state. His ability to make an impact both offensively and defensively gives Auburn a dynamic playmaker who can contribute in multiple areas.

Offensively, Smith has been a dominant force at Southside-Selma. In his junior season, he posted impressive numbers, racking up 46 receptions for 1,487 yards and 14 touchdowns. Not to be outdone, Smith also made waves on the ground, adding another 1,036 yards and nine touchdowns. His speed, vision, and ability to break tackles make him a nightmare for defenders, and his talent as a receiver allows him to be a deep threat on any given play.

On the defensive side of the ball, Smith’s numbers are equally impressive. He totaled 74 tackles, 15 tackles for a loss, and 11 sacks, showcasing his ability to disrupt opposing offenses. Add in his three fumble recoveries, and it’s clear that Smith has a nose for the ball, both as a playmaker and a game-changer. His defensive skill set will likely see him play a key role in Auburn’s defense, potentially as an edge rusher or linebacker.

A Family Affair

For Derick, this commitment to Auburn is not just a personal achievement but also a family affair. His brother, Erick Smith, also signed with the Tigers, marking a special moment for the two athletes. The Smith brothers are poised to make their mark on Auburn’s program, and their bond could provide both leadership and motivation as they embark on their collegiate careers.

Auburn’s Growing Recruiting Class

Derick Smith’s commitment is a major piece in what has been an impressive recruiting class for Auburn, with head coach Hugh Freeze steadily building momentum since his arrival. With a defensive player of Smith’s caliber joining the ranks, the Tigers are positioning themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the SEC.

As Auburn continues to rise in the recruiting rankings, Smith’s all-around skill set—along with the strength of his brother’s commitment—sets the tone for what promises to be a bright future in Auburn football. With his ability to contribute both offensively and defensively, Smith is a player who could make an immediate impact when he steps foot on campus.

Auburn fans have a lot to be excited about as they secure one of the top athletes in the nation, and with the Smith brothers now on board, the Tigers are building a foundation for continued success in the SEC.
