“Phillies Pin Hopes on Jordan Romano for a Major Rebound Season”

Jordan Romano was once one of the top closers in Major League Baseball, but his 2024 season was derailed by injuries. Now, the Philadelphia Phillies are betting on his return to form.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Phillies signed Romano on Monday, with Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer reporting that the deal is worth $7.75 million for the 2025 season.

Romano was a key figure in the Blue Jays’ bullpen from 2021 to 2023, earning two All-Star selections. Over 186 innings, he posted a 2.37 ERA and 1.091 WHiP, collecting 95 saves and striking out 230 batters against 70 walks, establishing himself as one of the game’s most reliable closers.

However, the 2024 season was a setback. Romano dealt with elbow inflammation during spring training and started the year on the IL. His struggles continued upon his return, as he posted a 6.59 ERA and a 1.463 WHiP over 13.2 innings before being placed back on the IL.

After undergoing elbow surgery in July, Romano missed the remainder of the season. The Blue Jays then chose not to tender him a contract, allowing him to become a free agent rather than going through arbitration.

The Phillies bullpen is currently in flux following the trade of relievers Seranthony Dominguez and Gregory Soto, along with the departure of Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez via free agency. While Matt Strahm has solidified his role and rookie Orion Kerkering has shown promise, the Phillies need a proven closer as they gear up for another postseason push.

Romano has the potential to fill that void if he can stay healthy. If he does, the Phillies bullpen could remain formidable despite significant turnover. It’s a risk worth taking as they aim to return to the playoffs.
