Chicago Fire FC appointed Gregg Broughton as their new sporting director on Tuesday, joining head coach Gregg Berhalter‘s staff.
“Gregg brings extensive experience from his time in Europe, and we’re thrilled to have him as our Sporting Director,” Berhalter, who also serves as the club’s director of football, said in a team statement. “He is a passionate leader with a proven ability to develop talent and build competitive teams. As a vital member of our leadership team, Gregg will help create a high-performance culture that drives sustained success across all areas of our sporting department.”
Broughton will oversee talent development and play a key role in player recruitment and retention, as well as assist Berhalter with strategy.
“I’m excited to join Chicago Fire FC as Sporting Director and share Gregg Berhalter’s vision of making the Fire one of North America’s top clubs,” Broughton said. “I look forward to supporting Gregg in all areas of the sporting department, helping to build a culture of excellence, and developing a player trading model that supports both signing and retaining top talent to ensure success.”
Broughton, originally from England, has deep ties to European soccer. He began his career with Wycombe Wanderers in 1999 and most recently served as the director of football for Blackburn Rovers in the English Football League.
Chicago Fire finished in last place in the 2024 MLS Eastern Conference with 30 points (7-18-9).
