LSU football fans received a jolt of optimism this past week with the news that Garrett Nussmeier, the Tigers’ talented quarterback, is returning for his final year of eligibility. The decision, made public by Nussmeier himself, came as a breath of fresh air for a program that has recently undergone substantial changes and is eyeing its next championship window.

The announcement was heartfelt and spiritual, as Nussmeier expressed deep gratitude for his journey and faith in God’s plan for his future. In a video shared on social media, Nussmeier said, “The fact that I am even in a position to make this type of announcement is truly a testament to His true glory and love.” With a message rooted in Philippians 4:13 — “I can do all this through Him who gives me strength” — Nussmeier underscored how his faith had played a central role in his decision-making.

The quarterback, who has spent years honing his craft at LSU, emphasized that his decision to return wasn’t just about football but about aligning himself with his greater purpose. He continued, “Since a young kid, all I ever wanted was to grow up and play in the NFL. God brought me to LSU for a reason.” This year, Nussmeier feels, is the right moment to finish what he started. “I feel like my time at LSU is not over,” he said, signaling his intent to leave everything on the field in pursuit of a championship. With a heart full of purpose, he ended the video with a powerful declaration: “My teammates, coaches, and the fans will get the absolute best out of me every single day until we complete that goal. Go Tigers!”

Nussmeier’s decision to stay in Baton Rouge is a major boost for LSU, a program that has been on a competitive trajectory since Brian Kelly took over as head coach. After redshirting in 2021 and spending two seasons as a backup to the dynamic Jayden Daniels, Nussmeier took control of the offense in 2024. His leadership saw the Tigers off to a strong 6-1 start, climbing to No. 8 in the rankings before a three-game losing skid dimmed their momentum. However, LSU rallied to finish strong, securing an invitation to the Kinder’s Texas Bowl where they will face Baylor.

While the Tigers’ 2024 season didn’t culminate in a playoff berth, the foundation was laid for future success — and Nussmeier’s decision to return for his fifth year only reinforces that momentum. LSU’s history of quarterbacks returning for an extra year speaks volumes about the potential of a seasoned, confident leader under center. Joe Burrow and Daniels both used their fifth-year seasons to dominate college football, with Burrow’s Heisman Trophy and national title becoming legendary in LSU lore. Now, Nussmeier is determined to add his name to that list.

There’s no question that Nussmeier’s decision to return brings stability and leadership to a quarterback room that will now be led by someone with the experience and maturity to guide the team through another tough SEC schedule. His journey has been one of patience and perseverance, and with a year of starting experience under his belt, he is positioned to make a major impact in 2025.

The future is bright for LSU, and with Nussmeier at the helm, the Tigers are poised to take another big step toward championship contention. LSU fans can now look ahead to 2025 with renewed hope, knowing that their quarterback is not only a talented leader but one driven by purpose, faith, and a hunger for success.

It’s clear: the best is yet to come for LSU football — and Garrett Nussmeier is ready to lead the charge.
