It seems like the injury bug just won’t leave the Orlando Magic alone this season. After enduring a slew of setbacks to key players, the Magic were dealt yet another brutal blow on Sunday. Moe Wagner, the team’s versatile reserve forward, will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL, as reported by Shams Charania of ESPN. The injury occurred during the first half of Saturday’s game against the Miami Heat, a game that already felt like a microcosm of Orlando’s frustrating season.

This latest injury is a particularly bitter pill for the Magic to swallow, as Wagner had become a cornerstone of their second unit. After initially arriving in Orlando as a relatively under-the-radar acquisition, Wagner quickly transformed into one of the most reliable bench players in the league. He was averaging a career-high 12.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game this season—numbers that made him an early contender for Sixth Man of the Year honors. His energy, scoring ability, and gritty play made him an invaluable asset to the Magic’s depth. With Wagner now out for the year, Orlando is not only losing a key contributor but also losing some of the momentum they had built in the early part of the season.

The Magic’s injury woes don’t end there. Superstar Paolo Banchero, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, has been sidelined since October. While his absence has undoubtedly been felt, it’s been a carousel of injuries for other members of the roster, too. Franz Wagner, Moe’s brother, has also dealt with his own health issues, further depleting the Magic’s depth. And let’s not forget the absurd string of minor injuries that have kept players out of the lineup in seemingly random fashion—an issue that has plagued this team all year long.

As if the basketball gods weren’t already testing Orlando’s patience enough, these injuries have come at a time when the Magic were starting to show signs of promise. With the emergence of Banchero, the growth of Franz Wagner, and a solid supporting cast, Orlando had begun to feel like a team on the rise. But now, with so many key players missing significant time, the Magic face the very real possibility of squandering what could have been a breakthrough season.

While there’s still time left on the schedule for the Magic to right the ship, it’s hard to see how they can overcome such a mounting list of injuries. This season was supposed to be one where the Magic could push for a playoff spot and build on their recent progress. Instead, they’ll be left scrambling to fill gaps in the lineup and, more than anything, hoping that their luck starts to change.

At this point, it’s hard not to wonder if the Orlando Magic’s season is doomed to be defined by misfortune. But as tough as things have been, the team’s resilience will be put to the test once again. With any luck, some of their injured stars will return soon, and the team can finish out the season strong despite the overwhelming adversity. For now, the Magic’s focus will have to shift toward weathering the storm and hoping for better luck in the future.
