Alabama Shakes Up Coaching Staff, Promotes Chuck Morrell to Linebackers Coach
In a swift and decisive move, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer made significant changes to his coaching staff this morning. Shortly after co-defensive backs coach Colin Hitschler was relieved of his duties, sources confirmed that senior defensive analyst Chuck Morrell has been promoted to linebackers coach for the Crimson Tide.
This move reflects DeBoer’s confidence in Morrell, who has a long and successful history of working alongside him. Morrell’s role will focus on the inside linebackers for the 2025 season, a responsibility previously held by defensive coordinator Kane Wommack. With this adjustment, Wommack will now focus solely on his duties as defensive coordinator, while Christian Robinson will continue to oversee the outside linebackers, known as WOLF linebackers.
A Trusted Ally in DeBoer’s Coaching Tree
Morrell’s promotion is more than a matter of convenience—it’s a testament to a relationship rooted in years of collaboration and mutual success. Their partnership dates back to their time at the University of Sioux Falls, where DeBoer was head coach and Morrell served as defensive coordinator. Together, they led the Cougars to an astounding three NAIA Championships in five years.
Morrell’s coaching pedigree extends well beyond Sioux Falls. He was the head coach at Montana Tech from 2011-2019, where he earned Frontier Conference Coach of the Year honors three times. After his tenure at Montana Tech, Morrell joined DeBoer’s staff at Fresno State in 2020 and 2021 as the safeties coach, and later followed him to Washington as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach.
At Washington, the duo orchestrated one of the most dominant defenses in college football, culminating in an undefeated regular season and a National Championship appearance during the 2023 campaign.
What This Means for Alabama’s Defense
Morrell’s familiarity with DeBoer’s system and his track record of success make him a natural fit for his new role. His hands-on work with the linebackers this past season as a senior defensive analyst laid the groundwork for this transition.
Alabama’s defense, known for its storied tradition of dominance, will benefit from Morrell’s expertise and focus on the inside linebackers. His experience developing players and implementing successful defensive schemes adds another layer of depth to a Crimson Tide coaching staff already stacked with talent.
Eyes on 2025
As the Crimson Tide gear up for the 2025 season, these changes underscore DeBoer’s commitment to refining his staff and positioning Alabama for continued success. With Chuck Morrell stepping into this pivotal role, Alabama fans can expect the defense to maintain its high standards while evolving under the watchful eye of one of college football’s most trusted defensive minds.
The move signals not only a new chapter for Morrell but also a promising future for the Crimson Tide’s defensive unit.
