Walker Buehler signed with the Boston Red Sox last week, and on Friday, he shared why he chose the team in free agency.
After spending his entire career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Buehler signed a one-year deal with the Red Sox worth $21 million, following a couple of injury-riddled seasons. Once seen as a future star who would command a massive contract, Buehler’s recovery from Tommy John surgery in 2023 and 2024 led him to settle for a prove-it deal with Boston.
During a Zoom call with reporters, Buehler explained that he initially envisioned free agency as a whirlwind of offers, but the reality was different. He considered multiple options, including multi-year deals, but ultimately felt that joining a “historical” team like the Red Sox, which has a real chance to win, was the best choice. He also mentioned his previous connection to New England, where he spent summers playing in the prestigious Cape Cod League.
Buehler’s experience with the Dodgers, including getting the final out in the 2020 World Series, hasn’t led to a return to the defending champions. Now, he gets an opportunity to join a Red Sox rotation that blends youth and experience. Should he perform well in 2025, Buehler could secure a larger contract next offseason.
