The Philadelphia Phillies may look to add a generational talent to the back end of their rotation this winter.
Max Scherzer, the superstar pitcher, remains a free agent and has caught the attention of multiple teams, including the Phillies, who scouted him during a recent pitching session. This interest indicates that the Phillies could be eyeing Scherzer for a potential signing.
At 40 years old, Scherzer is nearing the end of his career but still posted a solid 3.95 ERA in 2024, despite making only nine appearances. His 1.154 WHIP also demonstrates his ability to pitch effectively at this stage of his career.
The Phillies, currently facing the possibility of losing their star closer to the Reds in free agency, could benefit from Scherzer’s championship experience as they look to strengthen their pitching staff for 2025. While his fastball velocity has declined over the past few years, Scherzer still excels in key pitching metrics, such as getting batters to chase (36.4%), whiff (29.2%), and limiting walks (5.6%).
With the Phillies looking to bolster their rotation, Scherzer could be a valuable, cost-effective addition to a team in need of a veteran arm, especially with the team’s lack of former World Series champions outside of Joe Ross, who won in 2019.
