Red Sox’s Pursuit of Star Talent Hits Roadblocks as Spring Training Nears
The Boston Red Sox have spent the offseason searching for ways to bolster their offense, but with Spring Training just weeks away, their efforts have yet to yield a major acquisition.
Boston has been linked to two premier infielders—Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado—but the chances of landing either have dwindled in recent weeks. Initially, the Red Sox seemed poised to make a push for Bregman, but according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Houston has re-entered the sweepstakes, making the competition for his services significantly tougher. Bregman would be a perfect fit for Boston’s infield, but with the Astros ramping up efforts to keep him, the Red Sox may have to look elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Arenado has been a frequent subject of trade speculation this offseason, with the Red Sox emerging as a potential landing spot. However, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi recently reported that the likelihood of a trade has diminished, saying, “The chances continue to increase that by the time the Cardinals arrive to spring training in Jupiter, Florida, Arenado will still be a member of the St. Louis Cardinals.”
At one point, it seemed as if Boston had a strong chance of acquiring one of the two stars, but as the calendar turns to February, the reality is setting in that neither may be donning a Red Sox uniform anytime soon. While Boston has the financial flexibility to make a move, the front office may opt to rely on internal talent instead of swinging a blockbuster deal.
The Red Sox lineup still has potential, but with an underwhelming offseason thus far, the team may have to find production from within if they hope to stay competitive in a loaded American League East.
