Auburn High School continues to be a pipeline for Auburn University football, as standout running back Omar Mabson has officially signed with the Tigers. After a dominant junior season in which he averaged 138 rushing yards per game, Mabson is skipping his senior year to join Hugh Freeze’s program early.
Mabson was the heartbeat of Auburn High’s explosive 2024-2025 offense, leading the team in rushing yards and touchdowns. His contributions helped propel the Tigers to a 10-1 regular-season record, and he finished the year with over 1,500 rushing yards.
A Rare Decision
It’s uncommon for a player to forgo their senior year of high school football, but Mabson’s talent and potential made it a viable option. Auburn High head coach Keith Etheredge acknowledged the uniqueness of the decision during the signing ceremony.
“Usually, I would say that’s probably not a good idea… You probably need another year to develop and get better,” Etheredge said. “But he has everything it takes to be a high-level college football player. He’s going to be remembered as one of the best ever to come through Auburn High—he broke the rushing record, broke the touchdown record, and did all of that in his junior season.”
Looking Ahead to Auburn
Mabson’s decision to enroll early means he will begin his collegiate career this fall, turning 18 in August. His addition bolsters an already impressive Auburn recruiting class, and he will have the opportunity to make an immediate impact in the Tigers’ backfield.
With National Signing Day in full swing, Auburn continues to add talent to its roster, and Mabson’s arrival further solidifies the program’s future. As he transitions to the college level, all eyes will be on the young star to see how quickly he can contribute in the SEC.
