Suns Engaged in Trade Discussions with Wizards for Additional Center
With the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline rapidly approaching, the Phoenix Suns find themselves in a race against time to strengthen their frontcourt. While the acquisition of Nick Richards from the Charlotte Hornets has provided a much-needed boost at center, Phoenix remains in pursuit of additional reinforcements to shore up their rotation.
Richards has impressed since stepping into the starting role, but depth remains a significant concern. Jusuf Nurkić, who began the season as the Suns’ starting center, has struggled mightily and eventually found himself relegated to the bench by head coach Mike Budenholzer. Nurkić’s decline has left Phoenix searching for trade options, and veteran Mason Plumlee’s inconsistent play has only heightened their urgency.
According to Heavy On Sports’ Steve Bulpett, the Suns are reportedly working on a trade that would send Nurkić to the Washington Wizards while bringing Jonas Valančiūnas to Phoenix. However, Suns insider John Gambadoro has since reported that Phoenix has no interest in acquiring Valančiūnas, suggesting that if such a deal materializes, it may be part of a larger, multi-team transaction.
For Phoenix, the priority in any trade involving Nurkić appears to be offloading his hefty contract. The 29-year-old big man is signed through the 2025-26 season, earning over $18 million this year and set to make more than $19 million next season. Given his underwhelming performance and sizable contract, the Suns may need to include draft capital or additional assets to facilitate any trade.
With the deadline just days away, the Suns’ front office is actively exploring all options to bolster their roster for a deep playoff push. If Phoenix can finalize a deal, the key questions remain: what additional pieces will they have to sacrifice, and who will they ultimately receive in return? Stay tuned as the trade market continues to develop in the final hours before the deadline.
