Rumors are circulating within the NFL that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson may not be returning to the team in 2025. Once a prominent figure in the league, Wilson’s performance has declined in recent years, though his talent remains intact. Set to turn 37 by the end of the 2025 season, Wilson still has some years left in him. The Indianapolis Colts are in need of quarterback competition for Anthony Richardson, and Wilson could be a solid contender. If not, he could serve as a top-tier backup, capable of stepping in and securing victories when necessary.

In his Year-End Press Conference, Chris Ballard emphasized the importance of competition for player development. While the Colts are hopeful that Richardson can emerge as their franchise quarterback, they recognize the need for improvement. Wilson, despite showing signs of aging, still possesses the skills and tools to start in the league, though he may no longer be a full-time starter. He could provide a similar impact to Joe Flacco in 2024, offering significant production in a backup role.

Why the Colts Should Sign Russell Wilson

He’ll Challenge Anthony Richardson for the Starting Job
The primary reason the Colts should consider signing Russell Wilson is his potential to push Anthony Richardson for the starting position. Wilson, who started for the Steelers last season, is accustomed to being the lead quarterback and would bring competitive energy to the team. This would benefit Richardson, who needs to continue developing.

The Colts’ decision to start Richardson in Week 1 of 2023 is still up for debate. In hindsight, sitting him for a year or two might have been better for his growth. Despite facing challenges, Richardson has not been given up on by the Colts. However, if he fails to earn the starting job, Wilson could be a viable alternative.

He Can Still Perform at a High Level
Russell Wilson has a legacy as a top quarterback, having led his teams to multiple Super Bowls and been an MVP contender in his prime. While his production has dipped as he approaches 40, his performance in 2024 showed he can still compete effectively.

Wilson made his ninth Pro Bowl last season, throwing for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. He completed 63% of his passes and finished with a 6-5 record as a starter, leading the Steelers to the playoffs. While he’s no longer a long-term solution, Wilson could serve as the bridge the Colts need to stabilize their quarterback situation.

He Brings Strong Leadership
Russell Wilson is renowned for his leadership, something the Colts desperately need in their locker room. Following a disappointing season, there were reports of infighting, with players prioritizing their egos over the team’s success. DeForest Buckner mentioned that “ego” was a significant hindrance to the team’s performance. There were also issues with captains, such as Zaire Franklin and Anthony Richardson, failing to fulfill their leadership roles.

By bringing in Wilson, the Colts would introduce a veteran leader who has been through the ups and downs of a long career. While Richardson still has the potential to grow into a leader, Wilson’s experience could provide much-needed stability in the locker room and help change the culture. Ballard faces tough decisions this offseason, but adding a strong leader like Wilson could be key to setting the right tone for the team’s future.
