The Ohio State Buckeyes are deep into their search for a new defensive coordinator following Jim Knowles’ departure to Penn State. Head coach Ryan Day has been evaluating multiple candidates, but one name has recently surged to the forefront—former Detroit Lions head coach and New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.
According to a report from CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Patricia met with Ohio State in Columbus on Monday to discuss the position. His candidacy emerged unexpectedly, as he had not been widely mentioned in connection with the job until just recently.
A Proven Defensive Mind
Patricia boasts a strong defensive pedigree, having served as the Patriots’ defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2017 under Bill Belichick. During that tenure, New England consistently fielded one of the NFL’s most formidable defenses, playing a crucial role in multiple Super Bowl runs. While his head coaching stint with the Lions was less successful, Patricia’s expertise in defensive strategy remains well-respected in coaching circles.
Why Ohio State Is Interested
Ohio State is once again one of the most talented teams in the country heading into the 2025 season. While the Buckeyes have lost key contributors from their 2024 squad, they still possess a deep and athletic roster capable of competing for a national championship. A strong defensive mind like Patricia’s could provide the structure and tactical acumen needed to elevate the unit’s performance.
Last season, the Buckeyes’ defensive struggles in critical moments played a role in their shortcomings. Bringing in Patricia, who comes from the Belichick coaching tree, could introduce a new level of discipline and adaptability to the defense. His experience with multiple defensive schemes could allow Ohio State to adjust more fluidly to different offensive looks throughout the season.
A Decision Looming?
With Patricia now officially in the mix, momentum appears to be building toward him becoming Ohio State’s next defensive coordinator. However, Day and the Buckeyes’ leadership have yet to finalize their decision, and other candidates remain under consideration.
If Patricia does land the job, his ability to translate NFL-level defensive principles to the college game will be a storyline to watch. Could he bring the same defensive prowess that helped the Patriots win championships to Columbus? Only time will tell, but Ohio State’s pursuit of Patricia signals their intent to make a splash with this hire.
