Atlanta Braves pitcher Ian Anderson took a major step forward in his comeback from Tommy John surgery, returning to the mound at spring training on Saturday. After nearly two years away from the majors, Anderson is looking to reclaim his spot in Atlanta’s starting rotation.
Braves insider Grant McAuley shared a video of Anderson throwing, noting the significance of this spring for the 26-year-old right-hander. With no minor league options remaining, Anderson must prove he belongs in the big leagues if he wants to stick with the Braves out of camp.
A Key Piece of Braves History
Anderson holds a 22-13 career record with a 3.97 ERA across 52 starts. He played a pivotal role in Atlanta’s postseason success in 2020 and 2021, including an unforgettable World Series performance when he tossed five no-hit innings against the Houston Astros.
However, after struggling in 2022 with a 5.00 ERA, Anderson underwent Tommy John surgery in 2023 and missed the entire season. He made his return in 2024, pitching in 15 minor league games and posting a 3.44 ERA across multiple levels, including a 3.96 ERA in 10 Triple-A outings.
Great to see Ian Anderson on the mound. It's an important spring for the righty after two seasons on the road back from Tommy John. He'll look to crack the #Braves rotation coming out of camp as he's out of options. pic.twitter.com/3Ns3xaDVPi

Braves’ Rotation Taking Shape
The Braves enter 2025 with question marks in their starting rotation. Chris Sale, Reynaldo López, and Spencer Schwellenbach are expected to be locks, while Anderson and Grant Holmes will likely round out the group—at least until Spencer Strider returns from his own elbow surgery, which could be in late April.
Atlanta, coming off a second-place finish in the NL East and an early playoff exit against the San Diego Padres, is aiming to bounce back in 2025. Anderson’s resurgence could be a key factor in their pursuit of another deep October run.
A Pivotal Spring for Anderson
With no options left, Anderson must make an impact immediately to solidify his spot on the roster. If he can regain the form that made him a postseason hero, the Braves’ rotation could be even more dangerous as they seek another championship push.
