Four Detroit Red Wings Who Could Be Moved at the Trade Deadline

With the NHL trade deadline approaching, the Detroit Red Wings find themselves in an interesting position. While they are in the mix for a playoff spot, they also have several players who could be valuable trade chips. Whether it’s expiring contracts or an excess at certain positions, Detroit may be looking to move a few names to build for the future.

Here are four Red Wings players who could find themselves wearing a different sweater by the time the trade deadline passes.

Vladimir Tarasenko: A Familiar Name in Trade Talks

If there’s one certainty in hockey, it’s that Vladimir Tarasenko’s name will surface in trade rumors every year. The veteran forward has once again been linked to a potential move, with NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reporting that the Red Wings are exploring trade options for him.

The biggest question isn’t whether Detroit is willing to move him—it’s which contender sees him as the missing piece. With the salary cap expected to rise in the coming years, his contract isn’t as much of a hindrance as it might have been previously. Teams like the Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Vegas Golden Knights could all be potential landing spots. One way or another, it seems unlikely Tarasenko finishes the season in Detroit.

Ville Husso: The Odd Man Out in Net?

Detroit’s goaltending situation is crowded, and Ville Husso may be the odd man out. While Husso has seen his fair share of starts, prospect Sebastian Cossa has emerged as the organization’s future in net. Meanwhile, Jack Campbell has found new life in the minors, adding further depth to the position.

With Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon currently holding down the NHL roster, Husso becomes expendable. Several playoff-bound teams in need of goaltending depth could come calling, making him a strong candidate to be moved before the deadline.

Alex Lyon: A Low-Cost, High-Reward Option for Contenders

Lyon’s contract is another reason Detroit may look to move a goaltender. In the final year of a deal that carries a $900,000 cap hit, Lyon has been a reliable presence for the Red Wings. His affordability and strong play make him an appealing option for teams looking to add goaltending insurance for the playoffs.

That said, Detroit could also decide to trade Talbot instead, keeping Lyon as a longer-term piece. The decision will come down to the offers they receive and how they see their goaltending situation playing out beyond this season.

Patrick Kane: A Star on an Expiring Deal

After struggling early in the season, Patrick Kane has thrived since the Red Wings’ coaching change. The veteran winger has rediscovered his offensive touch and remains a dynamic playmaker.

However, he is on an expiring contract, and if Detroit wants to maximize his value, trading him to a contender could be the best move. Kane has already received a portion of his performance bonuses, but with another $1 million in potential playoff incentives, a team making a deep run may be willing to pay a premium for his services.

What’s Next for the Red Wings?

While Detroit remains in the playoff picture, it’s clear that some of these players won’t be part of the long-term vision. Whether they decide to be buyers, sellers, or something in between, the Red Wings will be a team to watch as the trade deadline approaches.
