Orlando City SC Moves: Halliday Heads to Houston, Lodeiro’s Future Uncertain

Orlando City SC’s recent transfer activity has taken some unexpected turns. While the departure of homegrown defender Mikey Halliday to Houston Dynamo FC was straightforward, the situation surrounding midfielder Nico Lodeiro remains unclear.
Halliday’s Move to Houston
Halliday, who saw limited action in 2024—playing just 105 minutes across six matches for Orlando’s first team—now has a new home in Houston. The trade sees Orlando City SC receiving a first-round pick in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft along with a sell-on percentage should Halliday be transferred elsewhere in the future.
The Lodeiro Situation
Unlike Halliday’s clear-cut transfer, Lodeiro’s departure was more complicated. The experienced midfielder left his Senior Roster spot, mutually agreeing with the club to terminate his contract. Orlando used its buyout clause to remove Lodeiro’s guaranteed salary from its 2025 budget, effectively freeing up roster space.
Despite his exit, Executive Vice President of Soccer Operations and General Manager Luiz Muzzi left the door open for Lodeiro’s potential return. However, it seems likely that he will land elsewhere, with multiple clubs—including the San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo—expressing interest in the playmaker.
Houston Dynamo’s Pursuit of Lodeiro
Houston soccer broadcaster and former professional player Glenn Davis spoke as though Lodeiro’s move to Houston was all but finalized, describing him as one of the best playmakers in MLS history. Davis emphasized that Lodeiro’s presence would be crucial for the Dynamo as they work toward securing a long-term Designated Player signing. Rather than replacing Lodeiro when that happens, the club would see him as an enhancement to their midfield.
A Bright Future for Halliday and Lodeiro
While Halliday’s move to Houston is settled, Lodeiro’s next step is still unfolding. What’s clear is that both players have promising opportunities ahead of them. For Orlando City SC, these roster shifts mark a period of transition as the club prepares for the next phase of its development.
As the dust settles, Orlando City SC will move forward, while Halliday and possibly Lodeiro gear up for their next challenges in Houston.
