Justin Fields #1 of the Ohio State Buckeyes
Could a Former Ohio State Duo Reunite in New York?

The NFL is flooded with former Ohio State Buckeyes making a name for themselves at the professional level, a testament to the powerhouse that is Ohio State football. However, it’s not often that these former teammates get a chance to reunite at the next level. That could change this offseason.
The New York Jets, in search of a quarterback, could be a prime landing spot for Justin Fields. Fields, set to become a free agent, would bring youth and potential to a team in dire need of stability under center. A reunion with former Buckeyes teammate Garrett Wilson only adds to the intrigue.
Fields to the Jets? ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler Weighs In
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler recently reported on SportsCenter that New York could have some level of interest in Fields when NFL free agency kicks off next month.
“They could have some interest. They like the idea of a dual-threat quarterback,” Fowler said. “He’s younger. I’m told Fields has looked at that roster and sees some intrigue there, too. They have some good young pieces like Garrett Wilson and a good defense.”
The potential fit is undeniable. Fields is a dynamic playmaker who could benefit from Wilson’s elite route running and playmaking ability. Meanwhile, Wilson would finally get a quarterback with mobility and a live arm to help take his game to new heights.
How Did Fields Perform in 2024?
Fields spent the 2024 season primarily backing up Russell Wilson with the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, he did make six starts while Wilson dealt with a calf injury, and he made the most of his opportunity. Fields threw for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception while completing 65.8 percent of his passes. He also added 289 rushing yards and five scores, displaying the dual-threat ability that made him such a coveted prospect coming out of college.
Wilson’s Continued Rise to Stardom
Meanwhile, Wilson solidified himself as one of the league’s premier wide receivers in 2024. He hauled in 101 catches for 1,104 yards and seven touchdowns, marking his third consecutive 1,000-yard season. Since entering the league as the Jets’ 10th overall pick in 2022, Wilson has been the team’s most reliable offensive weapon despite a revolving door at quarterback.
Will the Buckeye Connection Materialize in New York?
Fields and Wilson were never teammates at Ohio State, but their shared Buckeye lineage could bring a level of chemistry that the Jets desperately need. A Fields-Wilson pairing in New York makes plenty of sense on paper, but the Jets will have to decide if Fields is the answer to their ongoing quarterback woes.
As free agency approaches, all eyes will be on the Jets and Fields to see if this potential reunion becomes reality.
