Phillies Option Reliever Max Lazar to Triple-A Amid Spring Training Cuts

As spring training intensifies, Major League Baseball teams are beginning to trim their rosters, and the Philadelphia Phillies made a move of their own following Saturday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The team officially announced that reliever Max Lazar has been optioned to their Triple-A affiliate, narrowing the competition for bullpen spots as Opening Day approaches.
A Tough Battle for a Roster Spot
Lazar entered camp as a potential candidate for a bullpen role, especially with key offseason departures like Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez. However, the additions of Jordan Romano and Joe Ross provided reinforcement, making the competition even fiercer. Phillies manager Rob Thomson has emphasized that bullpen spots are up for grabs, but Lazar was unable to seize the opportunity this spring.
Struggles on the Mound
The 25-year-old right-hander struggled throughout spring training, allowing seven earned runs over just 3.2 innings across four appearances. His command was shaky, issuing four walks compared to three strikeouts. Those struggles ultimately led the Phillies to send him down to Triple-A, where he will have the chance to refine his game.
A Promising Minor League Track Record
Despite his spring struggles, Lazar has put together an impressive minor league career. Across 128 appearances (38 starts), he has posted a 3.24 ERA. Last season, he shined at the Triple-A level, recording a stellar 1.87 ERA and a 2.45 ERA overall in 29 appearances. That performance earned him a shot in the big leagues, where he made his MLB debut with the Milwaukee Brewers before signing a minor league deal with Philadelphia ahead of the 2024 season.
Looking Ahead
Lazar’s demotion doesn’t rule him out from contributing to the Phillies later this season. With bullpen depth always a concern over the course of a long campaign, strong performances in Triple-A could put him back on the radar for a call-up.
For now, as the Phillies continue evaluating their bullpen options, Lazar will look to regroup and prove he belongs at the major league level.
