CBS Sports’ Dayn Perry recently compiled a list of MLB players approaching major statistical landmarks, and Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber is on the verge of one of the sport’s most exclusive clubs.
Schwarber currently sits at 284 career home runs, just 16 away from reaching the 300-homer mark. If he stays healthy, it’s all but guaranteed he will reach that number in 2025. Only 162 players in MLB history have ever hit 300 home runs, making it a remarkable accomplishment. Bryce Harper, who reached the milestone last season, is the only other active Phillies player to have done so.
A Crucial Decision Looms
Philadelphia signed Schwarber as a free agent before the 2022 season, and he has since become a fan favorite. Now, with his contract set to expire at the end of the year, the Phillies face a key decision on whether to extend him.
Over his three seasons in Philadelphia, Schwarber has been one of baseball’s most consistent power threats. He owns a .221/.344/.488 slash line with a 129 OPS+ and has averaged 44 home runs per season. While his defensive limitations have made him a full-time designated hitter, his offensive production more than compensates.
The Phillies’ championship window remains open, and keeping their core intact makes sense. With Bryce Harper and Trea Turner locked in long-term, Schwarber should be a natural extension candidate. Despite a slow spring, Schwarber remains a premier power hitter. He hit a career-high 46 home runs in 2022, followed by 47 in 2023. While his home run total dipped to 38 last season, he compensated by improving his on-base percentage.
Perhaps most impressively, he set an MLB record with 15 leadoff home runs in 2024, proving he can still be a difference-maker at the plate.
