Insights on Donovan Mitchell’s Impactful Role from Cleveland Cavaliers Teammate

Jarrett Allen says he has learnt something significant from Donovan Mitchell

Jarrett Allen, who has shared the court with Donovan Mitchell on the Cleveland Cavaliers for two seasons, noted that he has gained valuable insights into the All-Star’s game that weren’t apparent when facing him as an opponent.

“Especially now, that man, he can pass,” Allen remarked. “That dude can pass. The way he finds people on the short roll, finds me in the short roll, people in the corner… He can find anybody on the passes.”

In addition to being one of the NBA’s top scorers, ranking fourth in the league with 28.0 points per game, Mitchell also ranks in the top 25 in assists per game at 6.2, a statistic that would mark a career-high by almost one assist per game.

While Mitchell’s role may have evolved slightly during fellow starting guard Darius Garland’s absence due to injury this season, his multifaceted offensive contributions have positively impacted Allen’s performance. Allen, currently averaging 15.7 points per game, near his career-high, and 2.7 assists per outing, exceeding his previous best mark.

Despite facing challenges such as Evan Mobley’s significant injury absence, the Cavaliers have enjoyed a successful season thus far, currently holding second place in the Eastern Conference with a 39-20 record. They are gearing up for upcoming high-profile matchups against the New York Knicks on Sunday and the conference-leading Boston Celtics on Tuesday.

Following a recent stretch of three losses in four games, the Cavaliers have rebounded with three wins in their last four outings, boasting a 21-6 record since the turn of the calendar year. Mitchell’s impact has been pivotal, with some mentioning him as a potential fringe candidate for the NBA MVP award.

Donovan Mitchell #45 of the Cleveland Cavaliers

Drafted 13th overall in the 2017 NBA Draft from the University of Louisville, Mitchell showcased his defensive prowess early in his career, earning a spot on the ACC All-Defensive team as a sophomore. This season, he’s averaging what could be an NBA career-high 1.8 steals per game for the Cavaliers.

While Mitchell’s long-term future in Cleveland remains uncertain due to his pending contract extension, Allen, along with his teammates, the organization, and its fans, hope to see Mitchell continue to showcase his diverse skill set with the Cavaliers for years to come.
