Kansas Fans Stunned as Flory Bidunga Enters Transfer Portal—But a Return Remains Possible

Kansas Jayhawks fans were caught off guard on Saturday when news broke that five-star freshman center Flory Bidunga had entered the transfer portal. Prior to this, all signs pointed to him staying in Lawrence, with no indication that he would test the NBA draft waters or seek a transfer after a promising first season at KU.
Bidunga’s freshman year had its highs and lows, though his struggles were largely due to limited playing time. When on the floor, he displayed flashes of dominance reminiscent of former KU star Joel Embiid—blocking shots, rebounding relentlessly, and making an impact on offense. However, he was only given 16.3 minutes per game in a crowded frontcourt, limiting his opportunities to shine.
Kansas always knew they had a special talent in Bidunga. His athleticism was on full display in February 2024 when he recorded a jaw-dropping triple-double featuring blocks. Some even speculated he could be a one-and-done prospect with a standout freshman campaign, but that scenario never fully materialized.
Despite entering the portal, Bidunga’s departure isn’t set in stone. Reports indicate that staying at Kansas remains a strong possibility, and there are three key reasons why a return makes sense.
Clear Path to Starter Minutes, NIL Incentives, and the Darryn Peterson Factor
One of the biggest surprises in Bidunga’s portal decision is that he had a clear route to becoming a starter at Kansas next season. With Hunter Dickinson (30.1 MPG) and KJ Adams Jr. (30.0 MPG) both graduating, the Jayhawks have a massive hole in their frontcourt. Injured forward Bryson Tiller is the only big man remaining on the roster after Zach Clemence transferred, giving Bidunga an open runway to log 30+ minutes per game.
Kansas also has the financial leverage to keep him. The Jayhawks’ NIL collective is well-funded, meaning they can likely match any offer another school presents. That said, fans would have preferred this situation to be settled before he entered the portal in the first place.
Another major factor is the arrival of five-star freshman Darryn Peterson, a projected top-three NBA Draft pick next year. Peterson has already expressed excitement about playing with Bidunga, and their on-court chemistry could be electric. The 6-foot-4 guard has the skillset to make Bidunga’s job easier, setting him up for lobs, creating space for him inside, and drawing defensive attention away.
Beyond their potential as a duo, Peterson’s presence will naturally attract NBA scouts, giving Bidunga more exposure in the process. With all eyes on Peterson, Bidunga will have an opportunity to showcase his skills to professional evaluators throughout the season.
KU Fans Shouldn’t Panic Just Yet
While Bidunga’s portal entry is concerning, the door remains open for his return. Given his potential role as a starter, lucrative NIL opportunities, and the chance to play alongside an elite prospect like Peterson, there are plenty of reasons to believe he stays in Lawrence.
For now, Jayhawks fans should take a deep breath. The situation isn’t ideal, but the odds still favor Bidunga wearing Kansas blue next season. Rock Chalk!
