Who Will Lead the Spurs? Coaching Future Uncertain Amid Popovich’s Absence

The San Antonio Spurs have assembled one of the most exciting young rosters in the NBA, led by generational talent Victor Wembanyama and promising rookie Stephon Castle. However, as the team builds toward the future, one major question remains: Who will be leading this squad from the sidelines next season?

For now, 38-year-old Mitch Johnson has stepped into the role of interim head coach following the sudden absence of Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich, who has been sidelined since early November due to a serious health issue. With no clear indication of whether Popovich will return for the 2025-26 season, the Spurs could be faced with a major coaching decision in the coming months.

Will Johnson Get the Job Permanently?

Johnson has been with the Spurs organization for several years and understands the team’s culture and philosophy. If Popovich is unable to return, San Antonio could opt for continuity and elevate Johnson to the full-time role. However, the franchise’s rich history and the sky-high potential of Wembanyama make the Spurs job one of the most attractive in the league, meaning they could explore more experienced options.

Could Ime Udoka Return to San Antonio?

One intriguing possibility is former Spurs player and longtime Popovich assistant Ime Udoka. Currently coaching the Houston Rockets, Udoka is familiar with San Antonio’s system and has already proven his ability to lead a young team. If the opportunity arose, would Udoka be willing to leave Houston to take over for his mentor?

Taylor Jenkins Emerges as a Top Candidate

A new and unexpected name has entered the mix: Taylor Jenkins. The Memphis Grizzlies recently made the surprising decision to part ways with Jenkins, despite his strong track record of developing young talent and keeping Memphis competitive in the Western Conference.

Given his success with a youthful Grizzlies roster, Jenkins would be a natural fit for the Spurs, bringing a structured system that could maximize Wembanyama’s potential while continuing to develop the team’s young core. If San Antonio is serious about finding the best available coach, Jenkins should be at the top of their list.

A Decision with Major Implications

While Spurs fans would love to see Popovich return, his health and long-term well-being take precedence. If he does step away, the franchise must make a crucial decision about its next head coach. Whether they promote from within, pursue a high-profile candidate like Udoka, or bring in an experienced leader like Jenkins, the choice will shape the team’s trajectory for years to come.

Regardless of who takes the reins, the Spurs have an incredibly bright future. With Wembanyama as the centerpiece and a young supporting cast brimming with potential, San Antonio is poised to become a powerhouse once again. Now, they just need the right leader to guide them there.
