The Boston Celtics are widely expected to advance past the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals after easily dispatching the Orlando Magic in the opening round. With a core that includes Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porziņģis, and Jrue Holiday, Boston arguably boasts the deepest and most talented roster in the NBA—making them favorites among many analysts to capture another championship.
However, that depth could create serious complications once the season ends.
According to ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, who recently appeared on The Pat McAfee Show, the Celtics are preparing for potential roster changes this offseason.
“There’s a growing expectation around the league that Boston will explore trade possibilities in the offseason,” Charania said. “Sources have told me for weeks that change is likely coming.”
One of the primary challenges: salary. The Celtics are on track to have five players earning at least $28 million next season—a league record. Their projected payroll would approach $500 million, also an NBA record.
While the salary cap is set to increase in 2025-26, the updated Collective Bargaining Agreement imposes stricter penalties on teams that exceed the luxury tax thresholds. If Boston can’t trim its payroll, the franchise could face harsh consequences, including trade limitations and the loss of future draft assets.
It may prove to be a difficult summer for the Celtics’ front office. But if they can finish the season with another title, the looming financial reckoning might be a price well worth paying.
