Broncos Strike Gold Late in Draft with Former Hoops Star Turned Tight End

The Denver Broncos may have uncovered a late-round gem in the 2025 NFL Draft, selecting Caleb Lohner with the 241st overall pick in the seventh round. While Lohner’s name didn’t appear on many draft boards, his unique athletic background has piqued the interest of head coach Sean Payton and the Denver front office.
Lohner’s story stands out: before trying his hand at football, he was a collegiate basketball player, suiting up for Baylor from 2022–2023 after transferring from BYU, where he played from 2020–2022. He made the switch to football last season, appearing in all 12 games and recording four catches. His debut came in a full-circle moment against Baylor, and he soaked in every bit of it.
“It was everything I expected and more,” Lohner said of his first football game. “Seeing how the game operates and getting a feel for the whole process — it was awesome.”
Despite limited experience, Payton sees high-level potential in the 6-foot-7, 245-pound tight end. “You can see the basketball skill set — that’s easy — at a high level,” Payton said after the draft. “There’s a small amount of football tape, but what’s there shows movement skills and upside. We’re excited about that.”
Scouts have drawn comparisons between Lohner and former Pro Bowl tight end Jimmy Graham, another basketball convert who thrived in Payton’s offense with the Saints. Payton sees similar possibilities.
“These tight end body types aren’t always coming through traditional pipelines,” he explained. “Some are playing volleyball or basketball. It’s about projection. When you get a look at someone like Caleb — with his height, hand-eye coordination, and athleticism — there’s a lot to work with.”
Lohner has already proven he has the competitiveness Payton values. He quickly picked up the complexities of the playbook, adjusted to blocking responsibilities, and showed an ability to win mismatches with both speed and verticality — tools that make him a versatile offensive weapon. His basketball instincts, such as timing and spatial awareness, have translated well to the gridiron.
As he enters his rookie year, Lohner could become a surprise contributor — perhaps even a breakout name across the league. If everything clicks, the Broncos may have just landed the next great basketball-to-football success story.
