The New York Yankees made a powerful statement in the opening rounds of the 2025 MLB Draft, walking away with two of the most coveted names in the class. With the 12th overall pick, the Yankees selected elite Georgia shortstop Daniel Pierce, followed by the selection of high-upside Tennessee right-hander AJ Russell in the second round — a pair of picks that signal the franchise’s focus on elite talent and long-term impact.
Daniel Pierce Adds Star Potential to Yankees’ Infield Future
With their first pick, the Yankees landed Daniel Pierce, a high school shortstop who had been climbing up draft boards throughout the spring. Known for his advanced glove, lightning-quick bat, and poise beyond his years, Pierce has been compared by scouts to Bobby Witt Jr. — a testament to the elite ceiling he brings to the Bronx.
Pierce’s ability to impact the game both offensively and defensively makes him one of the most exciting prep players the Yankees have drafted in recent years. His tools, maturity, and leadership qualities were exactly what the Yankees front office was looking for.
“Daniel is a complete player,” said Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman. “He brings athleticism, instincts, and a mindset that fits perfectly with the Yankee tradition. He’s the type of player who could wear the pinstripes for a long time.”
Yankees fans now have a new name to watch closely — one that could emerge as the next face of the infield in the not-too-distant future.
AJ Russell Brings Electric Arm and Big-Time Upside to Yankees Pitching Ranks
With their second-round pick (No. 52 overall), the Yankees added AJ Russell, a right-handed pitcher out of the University of Tennessee who brings one of the most electric arms in the draft — along with a fair share of risk.
Russell missed most of his sophomore season in 2024 due to internal brace surgery on his UCL, but his return in 2025 was nothing short of impressive. Over 70 innings, he posted a 2.70 ERA with 104 strikeouts and only 26 walks. His fastball — consistently in the upper 90s — is graded at 70, and he pairs it with a sharp slider and developing changeup.
“Russell is the kind of arm you take a chance on,” Cashman said. “His upside is tremendous, and when you watch him pitch, you see the makings of a potential top-of-the-rotation guy.”
Scouts believe that had he stayed healthy throughout college, Russell may have been a top-20 pick. Now, the Yankees believe they may have found a gem in the second round — someone who can become a difference-maker if he stays on the field.
A Bold Draft Vision in the Bronx
With Daniel Pierce and AJ Russell, the Yankees added two of the most high-ceiling prospects available. Pierce brings everyday star potential at shortstop — a premium position — while Russell could emerge as a key part of the Yankees’ future rotation if his health cooperates.
This draft reflects a clear strategy from the Yankees front office: target elite talent, bet on upside, and secure players with the potential to become foundational pieces in New York’s next era of dominance.
