The Texas Rangers’ 2025 season is teetering, and now the team has suffered yet another major setback. Despite sitting at 68-67 and still very much alive in the American League wild-card hunt, Texas has been battered by injuries down the stretch. The latest blow came earlier this week when star shortstop Corey Seager underwent an appendectomy, forcing him onto the injured list and leaving a massive hole in the Rangers’ lineup.
Seager’s recovery timeline remains uncertain. There’s a chance he could return before the end of the regular season, but that largely depends on whether the Rangers stay in contention. If they fall out of the playoff picture, it would make little sense to rush him back. In the meantime, however, Texas needs reinforcements, and they’re expected to turn to newly acquired utilityman Dylan Moore.
According to Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com, the Rangers plan to select Moore’s contract from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday. That move would bring the 32-year-old back to the majors less than a week after he joined the organization.
Moore is no stranger to big-league action. He made his debut with the Seattle Mariners in 2019 and quickly carved out a role as a defensive swiss army knife, capable of playing multiple infield and outfield positions. While he has never been known for his bat, Moore’s athleticism and glove work have kept him valuable, culminating in a Gold Glove Award in 2024.
This season, though, Moore has struggled at the plate. Before Seattle designated him for assignment last week, he was hitting just .193 with nine home runs and 19 RBIs over 213 plate appearances. Even so, his ability to step in at shortstop makes him a natural fit for the Rangers, who suddenly find themselves without their most important infielder.
Seager’s absence cannot be overstated. In 102 games this season, the veteran shortstop has hit .271 with 21 home runs and 50 RBIs, once again proving to be one of Texas’ most consistent offensive weapons. His ability to both hit for power and stabilize the infield has been central to the Rangers’ success. Losing him now, with only a month left in the season, places added pressure on the rest of the roster to keep pace in the wild-card race.
The timing of the injury is especially tough given that the Rangers have been heating up. They’ve won five of their last six games and appear to be building momentum at exactly the right time. Now, the question is whether they can sustain that run without Seager in the lineup.
Texas will officially place Seager on the injured list and add Moore to the roster before Friday night’s series opener against the Oakland Athletics. Rookie pitcher Jack Leiter is set to start for the Rangers opposite Oakland’s Jeffrey Springs.
For now, Texas fans will be keeping a close eye on Seager’s recovery while hoping Moore can provide enough defensive stability to keep the Rangers afloat in the playoff race.
