Myles Straw #7 of the Cleveland Guardians
The Cleveland Guardians are currently evaluating their outfield options to determine the best lineup strategy. They’ve tried various approaches, including acquiring Estevan Florial to add power to the lineup and converting infielder Tyler Freeman into an outfielder.
However, the team hasn’t overlooked Myles Straw, last year’s everyday center fielder. They believe that with a change in mindset at the plate, he can unlock more of his potential.
Manager Stephen Vogt commented, “He’s making solid contact and driving the ball, which is what [Chris Valaika] and he discussed over the winter. We want him to make an impact with his hitting. There’s untapped power there, and he needs to be more aggressive to unleash it.”
Straw’s playing time has been limited due to a virus that affected Cleveland’s clubhouse, but his recent performance suggests improvement. In 19 at-bats, he has an impressive slash line of .421/.500/.57 and an OPS of 1.079, including three extra-base hits.
Additionally, Straw arrived at spring training physically stronger, which may contribute to his resurgence. Vogt emphasized the importance of Straw embracing a more aggressive approach, encouraging him to swing for power rather than focusing solely on contact.
The question remains whether Straw can internalize this message and regain his value to a team in need of outfield production.
