The St. Louis Cardinals have reportedly “touched base” with a postseason star, sparking speculation surprise signing.

St. Louis has the potential to surprise many in 2024, with another significant deal possibly being a game-changer. The team endured a challenging 2023 season, leading them to become one of the major sellers before the trade deadline. Despite trading Jordan Montgomery, Jack Flaherty, and Jordan Hicks, the Cardinals aimed to rebuild during the offseason.

Their acquisitions of Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn, and Kyle Gibson have bolstered the team, but there’s speculation that one more signing could solidify their chances of competing for a World Series title. While St. Louis is poised to finish near the top of the National League Central standings, adding another pitcher could further strengthen their position.

Montgomery, currently a free agent, remains an option. Although a return to the Texas Rangers seems likely, the Cardinals have shown interest in him. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Montgomery is believed to want to return to the Rangers, as he played a significant role in their championship win.

While the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs have also expressed interest, the Cardinals’ involvement in talks remains uncertain. If Montgomery’s availability persists, his price tag could decrease, potentially making a reunion with the Cardinals more feasible. Despite their improved position, St. Louis could benefit greatly from reuniting with Montgomery.
