The Reds announced on Friday that Mike Ford, a first baseman/designated hitter, has been reassigned to the minor league camp, signaling that he won’t be included in the team’s Opening Day roster. Ford, who had signed a minor league contract with Cincinnati, has now been released from the club, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, making him a free agent once again.
Despite his impressive performance during spring training, where he appeared in 10 games and accumulated 35 plate appearances with a .455/.486/.727 slash line, including three home runs, Ford was considered a long shot to secure a spot on the Reds’ roster due to the team’s crowded infield. Even with injuries to Matt McLain and Edwin Arroyo, along with an 80-game PED suspension for Noelvi Marte, the Reds ultimately decided he wasn’t the right fit for the 26-man roster.
In the 2023 season, Ford had notable power numbers with the Mariners, hitting .228/.323/.475 with 16 home runs in 251 plate appearances. Although he demonstrated above-average walk rates, his strikeout rate was concerning at 32.3%. While Ford has historically performed better against left-handed pitchers, he has faced limited opportunities against them throughout his career.
Given his impressive showing in spring training and his strong power output in the previous season, Ford may have the opportunity to join a team in need of left-handed hitting. However, it’s more likely that he’ll secure a minor league deal with a team offering clearer opportunities for playing time at first base or designated hitter positions.
