Is there a possibility of Carlos Vela rejoining LAFC?

Few players in MLS history have had the impact that Carlos Vela made during his five-year tenure with LAFC. Signed in 2017 as the club’s inaugural Designated Player, he quickly became the team’s star as they entered MLS in 2018.

In 2019, Vela was named MLS MVP and set a league record with 38 goals in a single season. He helped lead LAFC to the Supporters’ Shield that year and again in 2022, culminating in an MLS Cup victory in the postseason.

However, negotiations for a contract extension faltered last year, and his previous deal expired at the end of 2023, leaving him without a club. LAFC general manager John Thorrington confirmed last month that the club was still interested in re-signing Vela.

“We’re still in conversation with Carlos,” Thorrington said. “I would love to find a way to bring him back to LAFC. Without discussing details publicly, it depends on what we can do and what makes sense for Carlos. Our desire to have him back is strong.”

Giroud’s reported impending arrival raises questions about Vela’s future. While other MLS teams, including California rivals San Jose Earthquakes, have shown interest, Vela seems in no hurry to make a decision and may have options in Mexico.
