After generating significant attention during spring camp, Auburn’s wide receiver unit might not be at full strength for Saturday’s A-Day spring game.
During a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze disclosed that the team’s wide receiver group is grappling with several injuries.
“We’ve encountered significant injuries within the receiver ranks. This has hindered our progress in certain areas, but aside from that, our overall health is relatively good,” Freeze remarked.
Most of the injuries have affected Auburn’s returning receivers, according to Freeze, who mentioned that Camden Brown, Caleb Burton, Jay Fair, and Koy Moore have been sidelined “for the better part of the last two weeks.” This quartet of returners collectively amassed 60 receptions for 679 yards and two touchdowns.
As of Tuesday’s press briefing, Freeze expressed optimism that Burton and Fair could return to action for Saturday’s spring game, but he was uncertain about Brown and Moore.
Should some returning wide receivers be unable to play on Saturday, it presents an opportunity for newcomers in the group to gain valuable reps. With transfers such as Robert Lewis from Georgia State and Sam Jackson V from Cal, alongside freshmen Bryce Cain and Cam Coleman, Auburn’s wide receiver roster has been bolstered.
Freeze commended Lewis and Jackson for their contributions, acknowledging that Jackson has been dealing with recovery from offseason shoulder surgery. He anticipates that they will provide quality depth to the team.
Regarding the freshman duo, Freeze had high praise, particularly for Coleman, suggesting he’s ready to contribute immediately.
While some receivers are sidelined due to injuries, Auburn fans will still have the chance to witness the talent added to the receiving corps by Freeze and his staff during Auburn’s A-Day spring game at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m.
