Three Atlanta Braves offseason acquisitions are proving to be successful, while one move may have potential downsides.

The Atlanta Braves are experiencing a mixed start to the 2023 season. Despite their recent comeback win against the Diamondbacks, there are concerns, such as Max Fried’s struggles and Spencer Strider’s potential long-term absence due to elbow troubles. The unpredictable nature of baseball has already showcased its highs and lows for the Braves this season.

Every team aims to build enough depth in the offseason to withstand potential setbacks during the season. While some players are more easily replaceable, the goal is to establish depth across the roster to remain competitive even in challenging times.

Unfortunately, there’s no direct replacement for Spencer Strider, but the Braves are in decent shape thanks to their offseason moves that addressed roster gaps without depleting their high minor league depth. This depth will be crucial for the team in the short term.

Here’s a look at some of the Braves’ offseason moves that have been successful so far and one that hasn’t quite worked out as hoped:

1. Signing Reynaldo Lopez appears to be a steal. Initially thought to bolster the bullpen, Lopez has transitioned back to a starter and performed well, providing valuable starting pitching depth, especially with Strider’s injury.

2. The trade for Jarred Kelenic is looking better than expected. Despite initial doubts during spring training, Kelenic has shown promise with a strong start to the season, indicating that the trade could be a steal for the Braves.

3. However, the addition of Aaron Bummer to the bullpen hasn’t paid off yet. With a high ERA in his early appearances, Bummer’s performance has been disappointing, though it’s still early in the season, and he has potential to improve.

4. The acquisition of Chris Sale could be the move of the offseason if he stays healthy. Sale has shown promise in spring training and his first start, providing hope that he could be a significant asset to the Braves’ rotation, especially considering the minimal depth cost in the trade.
