Max Verstappen Teases Possible Mercedes F1 Move with Playful Toto Wolff Remark

Toto Wolff has been making efforts to persuade Max Verstappen to depart from his Red Bull contract and align with Mercedes, amidst internal discord within the F1 champions.

Max Verstappen humorously remarked that Toto Wolff has recently shown him unusual kindness, amid efforts from the Mercedes principal to sway him towards joining their team.

Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until the conclusion of the 2028 season. Nonetheless, speculation has arisen suggesting he might opt for an early departure, amidst the internal power dynamics between team principal Christian Horner and advisor Helmut Marko, who incidentally enjoys a close relationship with the Dutch driver.

With Lewis Hamilton set to depart Mercedes at the end of the current season, Wolff has openly expressed interest in recruiting Verstappen, although the likelihood of success remains dubious. Nevertheless, following Verstappen’s triumph at the Japanese Grand Prix, Wolff offered glowing commendations for the Dutch racer.

“The dominance of Max this season is evident,” remarked the Mercedes chief. “His skill behind the wheel coupled with the performance of his car is truly remarkable. His mastery in tire management has elevated him to the top tier this season.”

“While our primary aim is securing P1, we must acknowledge the reality that we face. We strive to maximize our performance in the midst of strong competition, even if it means recognizing the exceptional benchmark set by others.”

In response, Verstappen playfully alluded to Wolff’s evident eagerness to enlist him into the Mercedes fold. “I’ve noticed Toto’s sudden warmth towards me lately, saying plenty of flattering things,” joked the 26-year-old.

Despite Wolff’s persistent efforts, Verstappen has reiterated his commitment to Red Bull, asserting that he has no intentions of departing anytime soon, regardless of the Mercedes boss’s desires.

“We currently have an opening, the only one among the top teams, unless Max decides otherwise,” remarked Wolff. “His performance speaks for itself… The prospect of a partnership is inevitable at some point, though the timing remains uncertain.”

Verstappen, however, maintains his stance, stating, “I am content with my current team, and my intention is to remain here until the end. While it’s always gratifying to receive praise, the mutual respect between Toto and me remains unchanged despite our teams’ rivalry.”
