Brisbane coach Kevin Walters reassures that the club has prioritized Reece Walsh’s safety as the fullback returns sooner than anticipated from a facial fracture.
Originally expected to be out for four to six weeks, Walsh will make his comeback against the Dolphins at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night, just three weeks after sustaining the injury against Penrith.
For added protection, Walsh will wear headgear in the upcoming match. Walters emphasizes that there is no jeopardy involved, stating, “We’ve ensured he’s given the green light by our entire medical team to play. We’re keen to maintain his well-being, both on and off the field.”
“The headgear is merely a precautionary measure; it’s a requirement for him to participate in the game,” Walters explained. “For any player, it’s tough to be sidelined and watch from the sidelines, especially someone like Reece who lives and breathes rugby league.”
The Broncos are dealing with injuries to Payne Haas (knee), Adam Reynolds (hamstring), Brendan Piakura (ankle), and Deine Mariner (back), but Xavier Willison returns to the bench after clearing concussion protocols.
Regarding the team’s injury situation, Walters commented, “This season, I’ve noticed many clubs facing similar challenges, so we’re not alone in this. Numerous players are sidelined each weekend. We’re enduring it, but we’re adapting and managing it effectively. Despite facing tough competition, we’re emerging from it positively.”
Despite spraining an ankle during training on Tuesday, second-rower Jordan Riki is expected to play. Walters stated, “Jordan will take the field unless he experiences discomfort on Friday morning.”
The Broncos remain optimistic about retaining star center Kotoni Staggs beyond 2025. Walters emphasized Staggs’ importance to the team, saying, “Kotoni is a key player, and our priority is to keep him. We’re not currently focused on his contract status.
He’s under contract until the end of 2025, so Simon Scanlan and Dave Donaghy will handle that aspect. Meanwhile, I’ll continue coaching Kotoni because he’s a fantastic individual to work with. Despite facing adversity, we’re witnessing Kotoni’s growth, and he’s delivering his best performances.”
