After dominating weaker teams at the start of the 2024 MLB season, the Boston Red Sox have hit a rough patch. They lost Trevor Story to a season-ending shoulder injury, and now they face more challenges with their latest roster move potentially impacting Rafael Devers.

The Red Sox have brought up Bobby Dalbec, a veteran infielder, which could signal trouble for All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers. While this doesn’t guarantee Devers will be sidelined, it’s concerning, especially as manager Alex Cora hasn’t ruled out an injured list stint for Devers.

However, the move might also be related to second baseman Romy Gonzalez, who is dealing with a left wrist contusion and is listed as day-to-day.

Devers has had a slow start to the season but remains a crucial hitter in the Red Sox lineup. If he does end up on the injured list, it could be a significant setback for Boston. Despite his struggles, Devers has two home runs, three RBIs, and a .184/.326/.395 slash line in his first 46 plate appearances of 2024.

There’s some hope for the Red Sox, though, as 23-year-old middle infielder Vaughn Grissom, acquired in the Chris Sale trade, is nearing a return from a hamstring strain that delayed his Boston debut. He’s set to join the triple-A affiliate for a rehab assignment on Friday.

However, without Devers, Boston’s season outlook becomes less optimistic, even after their strong start to the year.
