Joey Manu is set to bid farewell to the Sydney Roosters in 2025 after securing a one-year contract with the Japanese rugby union outfit Toyota Verblitz.
The anticipation surrounding Manu’s departure has lingered for months, with both the Roosters and Verblitz, featuring former All Blacks coach Steve Hansen, confirming the move on Tuesday.
The New Zealand international expressed mixed emotions about leaving the Roosters and the NRL at the conclusion of the 2024 season, coinciding with the arrival of Wallabies speedster Mark Nawaqanitawase to the team.
“It’s been a tough decision to part ways with the club and the NRL after cherishing my time playing rugby league for the Roosters,” said Manu. “I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to wear the Roosters jersey and for the unwavering support I’ve received.”
Nawaqanitawase’s transition from rugby union to league marks a rare occurrence, adding an intriguing element to both codes. Beauden Barrett and Pieter-Steph du Toit are notable figures among the Verblitz ranks.
According to Hansen, the club envisions Manu’s versatility as a fullback, winger, or centre, emphasizing his exceptional skills and work ethic, which should facilitate a seamless transition to union.
“His skill set aligns well with our style of play and the rugby league he currently excels in,” Hansen remarked.
Having been named the Dally M centre of the year for the Roosters in 2022 and clinching the Golden Boot award as the best player in international rugby league while playing fullback for New Zealand, Manu’s accolades are commendable. He has also showcased his prowess as a five-eighth for the Bondi club, where he made his NRL debut in 2016.
At just 27 years old, Manu boasts an impressive track record, including two premierships in 2018 and 2019, amassed over 164 games for the Roosters.
“While we are saddened by Joey’s departure, we fully support his desire to embark on this new journey overseas with his young family,” commented Roosters coach Trent Robinson. “Joey will forever be a part of the Roosters family, and we eagerly anticipate the season ahead.”
Manu joins Joseph Aukuso Sua’ali’i as the second Rooster in over a year to transition from league to the 15-a-side game, with Sua’ali’i set to join Rugby Australia next season.
