Essendon reportedly offered a significant six-year contract to vice-captain Andrew McGrath, aiming to secure his services until the end of 2030. Despite attracting interest from other clubs due to his dynamic playstyle, McGrath is expected to stay with the Bombers. AFL Media’s Cal Twomey revealed the club’s swift move to re-sign the 25-year-old, joining key players like Ben McKay, Darcy Parish, Jordan Ridley, and Mason Redman in long-term deals.
Twomey noted McGrath’s status as a restricted free agent and highlighted the Bombers’ commitment to retaining him with a lucrative offer. McGrath, who has played 139 games for Essendon since being drafted as the number-one pick in 2016, has also won the 2017 AFL Rising Star award. As he progresses towards a potential future captaincy, McGrath benefits from the leadership of current skipper Zach Merrett.
The club faces additional contract negotiations, including one promising young player Archie Perkins, and key prospect Harrison Jones. Meanwhile, veterans Dylan Shiel, Dyson Heppell, Jake Kelly, Jake Stringer, and Matt Guelfi are also looking to secure their futures with the club. Midfielder Jye Caldwell has earned a multi-season contract as well.
McGrath has started the 2024 season impressively, particularly in the team’s revamped backline, where he ranks elite in disposals, kicks, and metres gained. Currently boasting a 3-2 record, Essendon prepares for a challenging matchup against the Adelaide Crows at the Adelaide Oval on Friday night.
