Key pass-rushing prospects the Panthers are eyeing in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The Carolina Panther’s defense in 2023 was solid overall, despite lacking big-impact plays. They recorded the fewest sacks in the league with just 27, and the majority of that sack production is no longer on the team. Only Derrick Brown (2 sacks) and Shy Tuttle (0.5 sacks) remain from the players who registered sacks for the Panthers last season.

To address this deficiency, the front office signed Jadeveon Clowney, DJ Wonnum, and K’Lavon Chaisson. While these signings statistically match the departing production, there’s always uncertainty about how players will perform in a new team, and free-agent signings often don’t provide long-term solutions. The Panthers lack young talent at the edge rusher position, which is a pressing issue.

Potential draft targets for the Panthers include:

1. Chop Robinson, Penn State: Robinson is usually projected to be a late first-round pick, but unexpected draft scenarios could see him fall to the Panthers at 33. While he didn’t have remarkable college production, his athleticism and flashes of brilliance draw comparisons to dominant NFL pass rushers.

2. Chris Braswell, Alabama: Known for producing NFL-caliber defenders, Braswell is viewed as a pass rush specialist early in his career. He has a solid set of pass-rushing moves and physical attributes, though he needs improvement in run defense. He offers Day 2 appeal due to his defined NFL role and potential for growth.

3. Adisa Isaac, Penn State: Isaac might not be as polished a pass rusher as Braswell but has a more complete game. The Panthers might need to use one of their second-round picks to secure Isaac, as there’s a better chance Braswell could fall to them. Isaac’s high motor makes him a solid addition to the edge rotation.

4. Marshawn Kneeland, Western Michigan: Kneeland has the size for a 4-3 end but the agility to play as a stand-up edge rusher. Despite modest production at a smaller school, his strong combine performance is attracting attention. The Panthers could see value in his size and potential versatility.

5. Jonah Elliss, Utah: Elliss has the most production among the listed players but lacks the typical physical profile of an edge rusher at 6’2″ and 248 pounds. However, his agility, slipperiness, and exceptional 3-cone time at his pro day suggest he could overcome physical limitations with his skills and work ethic.
