Manager Kevin Cash of the Tampa Bay Rays
During a pre-game media session ahead of last Sunday’s matchup against the Giants, Kevin Cash provided an update on Josh Lowe’s status, mentioning that Lowe’s recovery has been positive, indicating progress towards his return to the team. This news came as a relief for the Rays, who have faced offensive challenges in the early stages of the 2024 season.
The team’s batting average stood at .239 after 18 games, with key players struggling to produce. Yandy Diaz, the reigning American League batting champion, faced a slump, going 1-for-23 at one point, causing his average to drop below .200. Similarly, Randy Arozarena struggled with a .117 batting average over the first 14 games of April, with both players posting OPS numbers below .600.
Cash expressed confidence in Diaz and Arozarena, acknowledging their talent while recognizing their current struggles as a natural part of the season. However, they were not the only ones facing challenges. Harold Ramirez had limited extra-base hits in his initial 16 games, and Jose Siri struggled with a .220 batting average and 28 strikeouts in 59 at-bats.
Lowe’s contributions were missed, especially considering his impactful debut MLB season in 2023. He showcased a blend of power and speed, batting .292 with 20 home runs, 83 RBIs, and 32 stolen bases. Lowe’s defensive prowess in right field, along with occasional appearances in center field, added further value to his game.
Unfortunately, Lowe faced setbacks during spring training, first with inflammation in his left hip and then with a strained right oblique, leading to his placement on the injured list (IL). Currently, Lowe is undergoing rehab in extended spring training and is slated to begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Durham soon. While there’s a possibility of his return to the Rays before May, the team will exercise caution in managing his comeback.
Cash highlighted the unique circumstances surrounding Lowe’s return, particularly the absence of a proper spring training. The team hopes for Lowe’s swift recovery but remains cautious to ensure his long-term availability.
Cash also addressed the absence of other left-handed hitters like Brandon Lowe and Jonathan Aranda, both dealing with injuries. Brandon Lowe was sidelined due to a strained right oblique, while Aranda suffered a fractured right ring finger. Despite these setbacks, the team remains optimistic about their eventual contributions once they return to full fitness.
