“West Coast Eagles Hit by Devastating Blow as New Draftee Ruptures ACL, Surgery Needed”
The injury occurred early in Saturday’s match between East Perth and Peel Thunder, with the 18-year-old playing for the Royals in several games this season.
Kavanagh was drafted by West Coast in the 2023 AFLW draft at pick no. 14, coming from the Calder Cannons and Victoria Metro as an inside midfielder.
She had a stellar 2023, earning All-Australian honors and clinching Victoria Metro’s MVP award.
Eagles AFLW head coach Daisy Pearce expressed the club’s solidarity with Kavanagh during this challenging period.
“Our hearts go out to Kayley, who has been dedicated to her development since joining the club in February, demonstrating her determination and competitive spirit in all aspects,” Pearce stated.
“She approached the opportunity to play in the WAFLW with enthusiasm and quickly earned the respect of players and coaches at East Perth. It’s disheartening to see her injured so early in the game last week.
“It’s another setback for the team, especially following ‘Tildi’ (Matilda) Sergeant’s recent injury, but we will provide unwavering support to both players throughout their rehabilitation.
“We are committed to their personal and professional growth, ensuring that this setback is just a minor chapter in their journeys with West Coast.
“Both Kayley and ‘Tildi’ have already expressed their desire to continue supporting the team, which speaks volumes about their character and why we selected them in the draft.”
