Tiger-Cats Look to Strengthen Roster with Canadian Receivers Ahead of Training Camp

As the CFL draft approaches next Tuesday, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are preparing for training camp, set to open on May 12, with a surplus of talented Canadian receivers. Among them is 27-year-old Brendan O’Leary-Orange, who recently joined the Ticats after spending four years with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, including the pandemic-cancelled 2020 season.

A versatile athlete, O’Leary-Orange transitioned from Toronto’s Michael Power High School to Canada Prep in St. Catharines before attending the University of Nevada. Drafted by the Bombers in 2020, he primarily served on the practice roster until earning game time as a special teams player and backup receiver. Notably, he contributed to the Bombers’ Grey Cup victory against the Ticats in 2021.

O’Leary-Orange’s return to Ontario is marked by his familial connection to CFL history, as his father, Doyle Orange, enjoyed a successful career as a running back. Reflecting on his decision to sign with the Ticats, O’Leary-Orange emphasized the team’s plan for his development and the opportunity to compete close to home.

With a physique standing at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, coupled with provincial-class sprinting abilities, O’Leary-Orange brings a diverse skill set to the receiving corps. He views himself as a complete receiver, capable of thriving in various roles within the CFL game.

Having learned from CFL legends like Zach Collaros and Bo Levi Mitchell, O’Leary-Orange values the insight and guidance offered by experienced quarterbacks. He credits them for elevating his game and anticipates further development with Mitchell during the offseason.

Raised in a competitive environment fostered by his father, O’Leary-Orange acknowledges the influence of his upbringing on his journey to professional football. Despite familial ties to the CFL, he emphasizes his pursuit of individual goals while expressing gratitude for his father’s mentorship and support.
