Richmond’s Wheelchair Football team is poised for the start of the VWFL season this Sunday, April 28, at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.
The reigning premiers of 2022, who finished as runners-up last season, are gearing up to kick off their 2024 campaign on a positive note as they take on last year’s champions, Hawthorn.
The highly anticipated Grand Final rematch will kick off at 1 pm and will be streamed live on the VWFL Facebook page.
Leading the Tigers in 2024 is the esteemed Teisha Shadwell, a rising star in the sport and a passionate advocate for female involvement in athletics. Matthew Morris continues to serve as the team’s coach.
Shadwell will be supported by key players from the 2023 season, including Angelo Mavroudis, James Weinert, Judeland Antony, Mitchell Stretton, and Vincent Naidu, who are all returning for another exciting season. Additionally, Chris Kotsanas has been promoted from the supplementary list.
Although Chris Henderson, the captain of the premiership-winning team, retired at the end of the previous season, the team has added Ben Noble, Miranda Charlton, and Dan Yore to this year’s supplementary list.
Weinert, in particular, is one to watch this season following his outstanding performance in 2023, which earned him a spot in the Victorian Metro squad for the National Wheelchair Championships. He was also awarded the Kevin Faulkner Medal for his stellar performance in Victoria’s National Title victory over Western Australia.
After Round 1, the Tigers will face St Kilda on Sunday, May 5, at the State Netball and Hockey Centre, followed by a Round 3 bye and a showdown with Collingwood in Round 4.
