West Coast Eagles coach Adam Simpson highlighted deficiencies in contest and clearances as his team succumbed to a 37-point defeat against Gold Coast.
Despite showing efficiency in attack and resilience in the final quarter, where they continued to fight despite the scoreboard gap, the Eagles struggled against the Suns’ relentless pressure throughout the match.
Led by dominant ruckman Jarrod Witts, who secured 10 clearances alongside 46 hit-outs, Gold Coast controlled the contested ball (+37) and stoppages (+17) at People First Stadium, where they maintained an undefeated record in four games this season.
Simpson admitted post-match that the Eagles were outplayed in contested situations, particularly in clearances, which combined with conceding free kicks and losing field position made it challenging for them to establish themselves in the game. Despite a spirited effort in the final quarter, Simpson emphasized the need for improvement, stating that their performance around the contest was below par.
Although the Eagles started strongly with the first three goals and won the opening quarter, the overwhelming disparity in inside 50s (67-35 against) indicated their struggle to maintain pressure and possession throughout the match.
While Liam Ryan completed his first game in over a year after two significant hamstring surgeries and Jake Waterman continued his impressive goalkicking form with four majors, including a third-place position in the Coleman Medal race, the efforts of skipper Liam Duggan, Jeremy McGovern, and Elliot Yeo were not enough to offset the Suns’ dominance.
Looking ahead to their next match against Essendon, Simpson expressed hope for the return of key players such as Tom Barrass, Harley Reid, and Noah Long, who should be available after a six-day break. Despite the disappointing loss, Simpson emphasized the importance of regrouping and preparing diligently for the upcoming challenge against Essendon.
