Coach Carl Willis’ message to starters : ‘Focus on Throwing Strikes, Avoid Pressure’

In a crucial game against the Braves, Tanner Bibee emerged as a standout performer, delivering the longest start by a Cleveland pitcher this season. He pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out nine and allowing just two hits on 91 pitches in a 4-2, 11-inning victory.

Cleveland’s rotation has faced challenges this season, entering Sunday’s game against the Braves with a record of 10-6 and a 3.83 ERA through 27 games. Despite ranking 11th in the AL with 136 1/3 innings pitched, the rotation has shown promise.

Pitching coach Carl Willis emphasized the importance of throwing strikes and minimizing walks to improve performance. He acknowledged the absence of injured pitchers Shane Bieber and Gavin Williams but expressed confidence in the current rotation’s ability to excel.

The rotation, comprising Bibee, Logan Allen, Triston McKenzie, Carlos Carrasco, and Ben Lively, is encouraged to focus on their strengths and not feel pressured to replicate the contributions of injured players.

In a critical moment during Saturday night’s game against the Braves, the Guardians capitalized on the extra-inning rule to secure a victory. After Josh Naylor’s double brought in Steven Kwan for a 3-2 lead, pinch-hitter Ramon Laureano stepped up with runners on second and third. Laureano’s sacrifice fly scored Jose Ramirez, extending the lead to 4-2.

Reflecting on the importance of scoring more than one run in extra innings, Laureano emphasized the high likelihood of the automatic runner on second base scoring. Despite minimal batting practice, Laureano’s focus paid off as he delivered the pivotal sacrifice fly off lefty Dylan Lee.

In injury updates, pitching coach Carl Willis provided updates on several players, including Sam Hentges, Eli Morgan, James Karinchak, and Gavin Williams. Hentges and Morgan showed positive signs, while Karinchak and Williams continue their rehab process.

In minor league action, Aaron Bracho’s standout performance led Akron to victory, while C.J. Kayfus and Trenton Denholm contributed to Lake County’s win. Alonzo Richardson and Jack Jasiak showcased strong pitching for Lynchburg.

Lastly, Steven Kwan’s remarkable streak of 48 consecutive plate appearances without a strikeout underscored his consistency at the plate.
